The winner of the 1994 Masterfoods retail scholarship for his work on retail brand strategy, Nick spent 6 years in executive positions within the Merchandise & Marketing functions with Coles Myer, working in analytical, project management and strategic roles within the Food & Liquor business.

In 1999 Nick left Coles Myer and founded smi, a consultancy providing specialised services in research, marketing and business strategy with specific emphasis on the fast moving consumer goods sector.

Nick has a specific interest in ‘trend spotting’ with strong focus on ‘health and wellness’ issues and its links to consumer behaviour, having seen the rise of consumer and business interest in this space.

At smi Nick worked with a number of Australia’s leading consumer companies on diverse channel strategy, business planning, consumer behaviour and category management projects.

In 2002 Nick was a national finalist in the Joe Berry memorial awards for his research and strategic paper on the future of the Australian Organic industry.

Nick has academic qualifications in Marketing (Boston) (Hons), and a Master of Business Administration (Melbourne). He is a professional member of the Australian Market & Social Research Society (achieving Qualified Practicing Market Researcher (QPMR) status) and the Australian Marketing Institute.

Nick is a keen sailor and windsurfer, holding several state and national titles and has successfully competed in events in Australia, Hawaii and mainland USA over the last 20 years. In 2006 Nick completed his first Sydney to Hobart Yacht race.

His sailing travels have exposed him to the damage done to the oceans through pollution and coastal degradation and have been instrumental in fuelling his interest in protecting the oceans and coastal communities.
